DescriptionIt can be daunting to come back to school if students don’t have solid friendships. This Getting to Know Me booklet is a friendship activity and ice breaker to help them connect with classmates and settle into your classroom. Students use skills like reading, writing, cutting, coloring, and following directions while improving social skills as they learn to interact with their peers. Kids make their own booklets from the supplied sheets. They write about themselves and color it in for others to read. They share the regular things about family, pets, favorites, and goals but also highlight the positive character traits they feel are important for friends to have. They also write a paragraph explaining what it is that makes them a good friend. As others read their books, they record answers to specific questions on their worksheet to discover people with whom they have things in common. The teacher sets a time for students to pair up to talk and ask each other questions from a sheet to see if they can make a connection. This one-on-one time gives them the opportunity to get to know another classmate on a deeper level and perhaps even find a life-long friend! How to UseCollect the booklets and place them in a large box or bag. Allow each student to put their hand in for a lucky dip. Whichever booklet they pull out is the one they will read (unless it’s their own). You can have students read 3-5 booklets and look for the answers to questions on the Getting to Know My Classmates worksheet. When they have completed it, they will highlight all the things they have in common with each person. After tallying the total, students will highlight the name of the person with the most in common. Make a time for students to pair up with the classmate they have selected. Print the Getting to Know You questions and set a timer for them to ask as many as they can fit in. There is a section on the back for students reading booklets to write their name to show that they have learned about that person. Teachers can purposefully select booklets to give out if they feel that certain students may be well suited. Use the booklets again during the year if students are struggling with friendships to introduce them to someone they may not have considered befriending.Store the booklets so you can select some to give to new class members to read to help them make friends. You can ask them to complete a booklet as well that can be given to the owners of the booklets the new student is reading.
